Thursday Night June 19th log

posted Friday, 20 June 2008

If you know much about politics in Dallas you understand the city is not short of events.  Tonight was no different with two events I attended.  The first event was the 5th annual (I think) 50th birthday party for former Dallas City Councilman Ed Oakley.  Ed held his event at Andrews Distributing located on Motor Street and Irving Boulevard.  It was not like his previous parties but the turn out was good with about 75 to 100 people attending.

The party was a fund raiser for Ed's expected return to politics next year. He plans to mount a campaign against current city councilman Dave Neumann.  Dave holds Ed's old 3rd District office and he says he has been approached to reclaim the seat.  It will be interesting to see these two square off in a political race. This race will be uncomfortable for many people liking both candidates.  Politics knows no friends and the desire for power overrides everything.  We shall see what happens.

The next event came from the first event because my friend, Ernesto Lopez, and I were invited to attend the Rising Stars Banquet sponsored by the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  This chamber is probably the most dynamic of any chamber in the area and they bring out a who's who of people when they hold an event.  If you want to be seen go to one of their events.  You will be pleased.

This banquet was impressive and was held at the Fairmont Hotel.  The crowd was the full of the elite in Dallas with many Dallas City Council representatives and other dignitaries in attendance.  A silent and then a live auction was held to raise money for scholarships.  The Hispanic Contractors Association gave $75,000 to the youngsters.  I could only be in awe of this group of people!
