Animal Control in Dallas

posted Tuesday, 17 June 2008

The Dallas City Council is considering a tougher animal control ordinance and I am in favor of it.  It is long overdue.  When you consider the city Euthanizes at least 25000 dogs and cats per year it is time we did something.  We need to crack down on irresponsible pet owners because animals deserve a higher quality of life than what we are giving them.  The number of abandoned animals left on the streets and the animals killed there is appalling.  It is heart wrenching for me.

I rescued twelve dogs one year and my vet finally told me to just keep looking straight ahead.  It cost me a fortune and trying to adopt out animals is not easy.  My three pets are all rescue animals and I would not give any of them up but the financial responsibility is enormous.  It is the price I am willing to pay for the enjoyment they give me but I have to be honest when it is their time I will not replace them.

Many people will object to stricter animal ordinances but it is necessary since common sense and self discipline have not been exercised by the public.  It appears people do not understand that when you make a life change your pet goes with you.  If it does not there are acceptable ways of handing the situation.

You do not leave your dog or cat at the residence you are moving from or throw it out of your car in a remote area when you get divorced.  If the animal has poor habits you try to train it or place it in a position where it will not exhibit the unacceptable behavior.  There is a positive solution to every pet situation but you must use some thought.  If you don't have a solution ask some one to help you.  It is not that hard.

I know people believe this a personal freedom issue but when an animal becomes at risk or the behavior of the animal affects others the city must step in and do something.  This is a problem that should not exist but until we see a change in the behavior of pet owners we will see stricter animal ordinances.  This is a reality check.
